The Top 10 Most Disappointing Fantasy Players to Date

Every year there are always a few guys that are drafted early and end up being huge letdowns. This year is no exception. Lets take a look at the top 10 and examine what has caused them to be so disappointing. For the most part, this does not consider guys who suffered injuries causing them to unexpectedly miss a significant amount of time.

10. Mike Wallace (58th ranked WR)
In the two leagues I looked at, the next Wide Receiver drafted after Wallace was Jordy Nelson and Wes Welker. Ouch. Do you think these owners would like their picks back? A very large contract fueled talk that he should become even better this year. So far he has had one truly good game and another 100 yard game where it took 16 targets for him to haul in 7 catches.
Prognosis: Coming off the bye, we hope that Tannehill and Wallace worked on their chemistry. It worked for Mike Glennon and Vincent Jackson, so who knows. Going forward, things are looking UP.

9. Trent Richardson (20th Ranked RB)
I give Trent some benefit of the doubt because he was unexpectedly thrust into a completely new offense. However that excuse can only go so far when the most total yards Richardson has had this year is 79. He has had a couple touchdowns to save him from being completely awful this year. Another positive is that his YPC has improved in each game with the Colts, topping out at 4.0 in the Monday night game against the Chargers. However its time to accept that this is what T-Rich is: A powerful bruising back who doesn't break for big runs.
Prognosis: Going forward, he should see a solid amount of goal line carries with a good amount of TD options, but his yardage shouldn't get too high. NEUTRAL

8. Maurice Jones-Drew (26th Ranked RB)
Prior to last season, MJD had built himself a reputation as a sturdy and reliable option in the first or second round. Then he suffered a major injury after 6 games and has not looked the same this season. Part of that is the situation he has been placed in with one of the worst offenses of all time. At the same time, early in the season the offensive line was not terrible, and MJD was unable to perform. Now, Justin Blackmon's return has greatly improved the passing game and it hasn't really helped either.
Prognosis: The good is that he has had touchdowns against the Seahawks and the Broncos. The bad is that his best YPC is 4.1 against a Rams defense and that same defense in the two games before and now one game after allowed these rushing totals: 175 to DeMarco Murray, 153 to Frank Gore, 141 to Arian Foster. All great guys, but compare that to MJD's 70 yards and its clear how far he has fallen. DOWN

7. Colin Kaepernick (23rd ranked QB)
Last year, Kaepernick came in after the 49ers bye and played 8 games with his worst being a couple of 14 fantasy point days against tough division rivals in the Seahawks and Rams. That is a fantastic minimum for any QB. This year has been a different story. After week 1, it looked like a fantastic draft pick when he destroyed the Packers and didn't even run much. He had 30 fantasy points that day. Since then his best game was in week 6 with 15. He hasn't been able to get much going in the way of the run and with fewer options to throw to, he has struggled like you would expect from a young quarterback.
Prognosis: It looks like he isn't quite the superstar QB he appeared to be on the super bowl run last year. But he does have Mario Manningham coming back and Crabtree eventually as well. Couple that with a few good matchups and things are looking UP

6. Stevan Ridley (32nd ranked RB)
Ridley had a monster year in 2012. A number of bad things happened at the start of the season that caused him to do so poorly. In week 1 he fumbled after getting off to a good start and was not seen from again. The next two weeks he ended up facing a couple of the most brutal run defenses this season. The jets are 4th in fewest fantasy points allowed to RBs, the Bucs are 2nd. Since then he also missed a game to injury but has looked very good in two games since.
Prognosis: He faces the tough Jets again this coming week, but it should get much better after that. UP UP UP

5. C.J. Spiller (26th ranked RB)
Spiller has been a tough one to figure out this year. I and many other analysts were extremely high on him in the preseason. He IS one of the most electrifying backs in the game and I have no doubt about that. But he isn't particularly good at breaking through defenders and it seems like he is always playing through injury, which has resulted in a few bad games this year. Of course the emergence (again) of Fred Jackson has hampered his touches too.
Prognosis: If he can fully recover from his ankle injury, I think he can play very well. But so long as FJax is there, he won't be a top 5 guy this year. NEUTRAL

4. New York Giants fantasy relevant players (except Victor Cruz & Randle)
No one saw this coming and no matter who you drafted on the Giants, they have been disappointing so far. David Wilson? huge disappointment. Hakeem Nicks? disappointment. Eli Manning as a backup or in a deeper league? disappointing. Brandon Myers? Nope.
Prognosis: I have to believe this team improves, but I'm not trading for any of these guys in hopes of that being the case. NEUTRAL

3. Ray Rice (31st ranked RB)
Yes folks, Ray Rice is my most disappointing running back on the season. His futility on the field this season has been masked by his three touchdowns to some extent, but he really has been bad. He missed one game to injury, he hardly played in another for reasons unknown and his best YPC is 3.4 *if* you count the game he has hardly played. In PPR he has had a couple nice games, but the yards aren't coming in the catching game either.
Prognosis: I HAVE to believe his yardage improves, or at least he gets involved in the passing game. But he has looked really bad so far. NEUTRAL

2. Roddy White (99th ranked WR)
Wait, is that a typo? 99th? Editor can you check that for me? Oh, I don't have an editor. Yes 99th ranked WR is correct. To be fair to Roddy, he has been playing through a pretty bad injury. At the same time, if you are this ineffective coming off injuries, you should not be playing. Roddy White's best game this year is 45 yards. That is the best game for a guy who has played in and caugh a pass in all 6 games this year and is coming off six straight years of 1,100 yards and 6+ TDs.
Prognosis: The best thing for Roddy owners is that he does sit out the game after the bye to make sure he is fully healed. After that, he can only improve from where he's been. Not sure he returns to elite status. UP

1. Rob Gronkowski (No Games To Date)
Those parentheses say it all. Owners that drafted Gronk still drafted him fairly high with the expectation that he would miss 3 or 4 games at most. Owners were probably hoping for 3-4 touchdowns by now! Worst of all, he was supposed to play the past two weeks, but ended up being scratched late in the week. Now we don't even know if he returns this week.
Prognosis: At this point we have to assume that he comes back in 1-2 weeks. Its impossible to predict how he will perform right away, but its fair to say he should perform like his old self at some point in the season. UP
